How Does Fiber Help You Lose Weight?

Does fiber help in weight loss? This is a common question with many people. The answer to that is fiber can really assist in weight loss but too much of it can cause digestive problems and mineral deficiencies within the body. You should eat recommended amount of fiber as part of a healthy diet but avoid excesses in order to prevent unwanted side effects. Anything done in excess can prove harmful to your health.

According to The National Academy of Sciences Food and Nutrition Board, adult men should consume around 30 to 38 grams of fiber everyday while women should consume between 12 to 28 grams per day. Anything above that would be considered as excess. Sadly most adults consume very less quantity, something in the range of 8 to 14 grams per day. If you are not used to eating fiber, you should increase its intake gradually. Rapid increase of fiber consumption can result in gas or diarrhea.
An important thing to remember is that you should drink plenty of fluids when you increase fiber intake. Though fiber helps in bowel movements, without adequate fluids it may have opposite effect and can cause constipation.

Fiber is the indigestible part of plant-based foods such as vegetables, grains or fruits. It passes through our digestive tract unchanged and does not provide calories or nutrition, yet it is healthy for us as it keeps our bowel movements regular, makes us feel full sooner so that we can avoid overeating and provides other health benefits.

When people are trying to lose weight, they have to control their eating habits. They have to try and eat less than they normally do and also avoid eating in between meals. Fiber can help a great deal in this regard. First of all, it will make you feel full sooner than other foods. Due to this you are likely to eat less. It will also keep you feeling full for longer time so that you can avoid the urge to eat in between meals. When you can keep your hunger at bay, it would be a major victory while trying to lose weight.

How to Increase Fiber Consumption:

To increase fiber consumption, eat whole and natural foods and avoid processed foods. Some good sources of fiber are:

Whole grains - oats, wheat, barley
Legumes - dry beans, peas, lentils
Brown rice
Fruits and vegetables
Meat and other dairy products do not have any fiber content while refined grains have most of their fiber removed.

Precautions:

As mentioned earlier, you should slowly add more fiber to your diet. At the same time, drink lot of water when you are on a high fiber diet. Stay within the recommended limits and avoid excesses so that you do not run into other health problems.

Successful weight loss depends on the ability to control the appetite, so isn’t it great to know there are particular foods that can help reduce your appetite and keep your dieting goals on track? Knowing such food exists will do little to help you unless you know which foods are included on the list and how to incorporate those items in your weight loss plan.

Eat Your Vegetables

Fresh vegetables are high in fiber, water and essential vitamins and minerals. This is what makes a salad the perfect first course for lunch and dinner. The best salads are those that incorporate vegetables with a variety of color without adding extra fat or sugar. Colorful vegetables supply a variety of important nutrients and add more taste to a salad. Choose a lettuce or other green leafy vegetable as the base and add sliced radishes, yellow pepper, cucumber, fresh mushrooms and shredded carrots. Of course you do not have to stick with those vegetables alone. Those who are not big vegetable lovers can usually find a combination to suit their taste. To reduce fat without losing flavor, add a fat-free dressing or make your own with a tablespoon of olive oil combined with a teaspoon of lemon juice or balsamic vinegar. If you eat two cups of salad before a main meal, you will feel full faster and eat less as a result.

Choose Whole Grains

Eat whole grains in limited amounts. Whole grains contain dense fiber. This is the kind of fiber that expands in the stomach and takes more time to digest. You will have fewer cravings because you will feel full and your body will be satisfied that it has what it needs because it has to work longer to metabolize what you have put into it. However, fiber-dense foods are often calorie-dense as well, so keep your intake to one serving per meal.

Get Your Protein

Protein that is low in fat, such as chicken or turkey breast, fish or low-fat cheeses are the building blocks of muscle. When eaten proportionately with other food groups, protein also has the lasting effect of reducing the appetite. What is more, protein burns more calories than other types of foods. If you are a vegetarian, alternative sources include nuts, seeds and legumes. Because nuts and seeds tend to be high in fat, be sure to follow guidelines for individual serving sizes. Typically, one quarter of a cup equals one serving size.

How You Eat is as Important as What You Eat

Always eat breakfast. Research shows those that eat breakfast are less likely to over-indulge throughout the day. Eating breakfast also kick starts the metabolism. Without breakfast, you are likely to feel sluggish, burn fewer calories, and overdo with a snack or at lunch.

Try spreading your daily food across several small meals rather than three larger ones. Keeping your furnace stoked with fuel will reduce your appetite and boost your metabolism throughout the day. Don’t feel like you have to fit in every meal and make sure what you eat is low in calories and healthy. If you don’t happen to be hungry, there is no reason to feel you have to eat.

Healthy Dieting Made Easy

Let's face it - dieting is one of those things none of us really like. First, it forces you to admit that you're a bit overweight (that's never easy). Secondly, you have to spend more money on various programs or frozen food entrees that are small and unsatisfying. Lastly, you're tired of the on/off dieting thing. It seems like every program out there claims that their way is the most efficient and affordable, yet many of these programs fail to show you how to discover healthy dieting.
Every program I've ever seen does two basic things: 1. Limits your caloric intake and 2. Balances your proteins, fats, carbs and sugars. These two fundamentals can be very easily implemented. Losing weight the healthy way is easier than you think. Healthy dieting offers a change in lifestyle rather than a twelve week plan.
Choose Foods Close to Nature.
The very first thing you need to do is eliminate all foods that are artificial or processed. This means no light mayo or diet soda; both of these are not from nature. Reprogram your thinking away from low calorie, low fat and low carb onto questioning the foods origin. You can't go wrong with nature; you're body will work with real foods much better than lab experiments. Stick to fruits and veggies, products that are only 100% whole grain and the ability to identify ever ingredient listed on the label as real and from nature.
Limit Your Consumption.
Yes, it is time for discipline. Take a sheet of paper and keep a daily tally of your calories. You'll want to eat three meals with a snack between breakfast and lunch and lunch and dinner. Eating 1800-2400 calories in day coupled with a 30 minute workout is bound to shed the weight. Healthy dieting will burn the fat away slowly. I know we all want quick and easy results, but when you choose to diet the healthy way, you should loose between .5 and 3 pounds a week. The great benefit to losing weight this way is that it will say off. When you lose 15 pounds in one week you're body will rebound eventually.
Balance Your Types of Food.
In every meal and snack you'll want to attempt to eat a healthy combination of protein, complex carbs (whole grains), healthy fats and low sugar foods. A great dinner would be baked, lean chicken breast, brown rice, broccoli and a side salad (without heavy dressing). By balancing the various types of foods, you encourage your body to work in harmony with the foods you ingest. You will also need to get rid of all added sugar in your diet. Don't replace sugar with artificial sweeteners; they're just as bad if not worse. Use xylitol or stevia to sweeten your coffee, tea cereal, etc. These are natural, sugar replacements with no calories or sugars.
If you're serious about losing weight the healthy way, follow these three basic steps and you will see tremendous results in a few weeks. Stick to it and don't allow yourself to cheat. After you get to your desired weight, then you can add in special treats every so often. Don't let the multi-million dollar weight loss companies rip you off. Find someone in your everyday life that will encourage, support and hold you accountable to this healthy dieting lifestyle. You can do anything when you put your mind to it.
